Free Advice
There are a number of sources of advice, guidance and peer-to-peer learning that you can access for free.
For those involved in the planning and management of new archive buildings:
MAPLE (the Major Archive Projects Learning Exchange) is a lively group of over 80 organisations pooling their knowledge and experience in this area. I set up this group in 2007 and would recommend it as an excellent source of peer support for anyone at the planning or delivery phase.

For those involved in community archive projects:
The website run by the Community Archives and Heritage Group is a good source of basic advice on setting up a community archive and provides basic cataloguing guidance. As an original member of the web editing team, I would also recommend the site's directory of community archives for those interested in learning from other groups.
For those tasked with looking after their organisation's archives:
'Archive Principles and Practice: an introduction to archives for non-archivists' is a guidance document produced by The National Archives.
For those managing or co-ordinating volunteers within an archive service:
The Archives & Records Association has set up an archive volunteer co-ordinators network to share good practice and information. This is just one element of the work of the ARA Volunteering group, of which I was founder Convenor.
